Tips to Win at Texas Hold’em Poker:

Do not play too many hands:
A common mistake is to play too many hands. Do not fall into the trap of believing that you can win with every hand you get. Of course it is possible to bluff through a bad hand, but in the long run you have to play the hands that have the best chance of winning. Somewhere between 10-20% of your hole cards are playable.

Do not bluff too much:
Another common misconception about poker is that you have to bluff all the time to win. When you see big tournaments, you can see lots of spectacular scams that succeed. Keep in mind that this is a compilation of the best moments during the tournament and that it is not at all as common with scams as it may seem. When you are a beginner, it is better to try to play your cards well than to bluff often. You can try a scam here and there, but develop it only when you have increased your knowledge and practiced a lot.

Think about your competitors’ cards:
Do not forget to try to judge the strength of your opponent’s hand. It’s nice to sit with a good hand but you have to try to figure out if your opponent has an even better one. Sitting with a ladder can feel good, but if there are 4 cards of the same suit on the table and your opponent raises, you have to think about whether you think your hand is really the best.

Play against players who are worse than you:
This may seem obvious, but you would be surprised if you knew how many players violate the most basic poker principles. Sometimes move around different tables and observe different players’ playing styles so you can fairly quickly assess whether they are aware of the situation. You can often already see in the lobby of the casino, for example, how many hands are played, if it is a high number, there are probably players who play clearly more often than they should with their cards.

Take your position into account:
Your position in the current game round is a very important factor in how you play. The best position is when you are the last in the round as you already know how the others have acted. Having a good position makes it easier for you to make assessments that in turn can turn even a bad hand into a winning hand. For example, if you are in front of those who have laid out their blinds, it can sometimes be time to raise to twist their blinds.

Be concentrated:
Always try to read your opponents and learn how to act. Do this even if you have gone to bed. Hopefully you can find patterns for how they do when they have a good and a bad hand respectively. If they bluff often, they raise quickly when they try to bluff, they try to get the pot up when they have good cards by raising small all the time, and so on. Also look back at previous rounds of play where you can often see who has done what and then finally which cards they have had.
